. . . Gundogs natural instinct . . .

The instincts and abilities of wild animals has always intrigued and amazed mankind and the domestication of some of these animals has allowed us access to a small fraction of these instincts.

The domestic dog has, arguably, supplied the greatest proportion of its’ natural abilities to man. In thousands of backyards across Australia, the humble Labrador passes the day, eats his dinner, fetches balls and revels in every little bit of attention he can get, no matter how minute. The Labrador is not the only breed of gundog that craves the attention of his owners. As with all breeds from Setters to Golden Retrievers, Spaniels to the German Shorthaired Pointers, they tirelessly retrieve balls, day in, day out, with seemingly unending enjoyment. However, very few of their owners realise that the natural instincts of their boisterous retriever go far beyond that of fetching tennis balls.

Gundogs have been used for centuries to help their masters put dinner on the table and thus help feed the family. In the early development of the gundog, their ability to find and retrieve downed game, without devouring it on the way back to the shooter, and subsequently delivering to hand without damaging it, was invaluable. Along with this important attribute, mankind also found a need for their hunting companions to find, flush and point the location of game in the field, aiding the development of gundog breeds with various skill sets: Retrievers for retrieving, Spaniels for flushing and Pointers for locating and pointing game.

The evolution of mankind and the introduction of supermarkets and freshly prepared food, has removed our need for the skills of our gundogs in today’s society. However, the breeds themselves still carry the same instincts and natural abilities of their forefathers. So without the need for hunting our own food, how do we exercise these natural skills and instincts of these dogs?

SSAA United Field and Retrieving Branch, or more commonly known as UFR, is a gundog club that holds retrieving trials for all breeds of gundogs, in the South-East Queensland area.

Retrieving Trials are competitions used to test a gundogs’ natural working instincts, in typical duck hunting scenarios, using artificial fowl to simulate shot game. The dogs are tested on retrieves both across land and in water, in areas that can range from sparse paddocks to undulating gullies and waterways. Although the dogs are not retrieving real birds, their ability to scent, find and retrieve the artificial game has been shown to be no different from the real thing.

A basic Retrieving Trial run (or competition) would involve the handler firing a blank round from a shotgun in the direction of artificial game thrown from a catapult, up to 150 meters away. The dog is required to sit steadily beside the handler during this time, without breaking away before being sent for the retrieve. When the game has landed, the owner then sends, or asks this dog to ‘fetch’, with the dog retrieving to hand, and completing the run.

. . . Abuse of Thai Tigers proves true . . .

You may or may not have heard of the Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Forest Monastery in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. It is run by Monks and was first established as a sanctuary for Tigers that had been rescued from Poachers.

Over recent years the Temple has become a popular tourist destination, attracting hundreds of visitors from all over the world. In the past the Temple has been successful because it claimed that the Tigers live and move freely, in peace amongst the temple's monks, who were apparently actively engaging in rescue work and conservation.

The Temple is now involved in complex legal procedures, defending claims that they are exchanging adult tigers for younger cubs from poachers, abusing the tigers and keeping them in poor living conditions.

There is now evidence gathered by Care For The Wild International (www.careforthewild.com) that the tigers are being abused, kept in appalling conditions and being fed an inadequate diet, leaving them malnourished and lethargic.

Care For The Wild International found that not only is the Temple engaging in illegal trafficking of tigers, physical abuse of the tigers living at the temple but they are also creating opportunities for dangerous interactions between tigers and tourists. The Temple asks visitors to sign a disclaimer that dictates they are not responsible for any injury or damage done to them by the tigers.

For more information about the Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Forest Monastery and how the tigers are being treated, go to www.tigertempletruths.org or join them on Facebook by clicking here.

. . . Your cat's safe haven . . .

Any cat lover knows that cats love to explore and roam free. If you’ve ever owned a cat you would know that many cats pride themselves on being escape artists.

The free spirit of the feline makes it difficult for many cat owners to keep a watchful eye on their furry friends. In this day and age the safety of your cat once it leaves the protection of your house is not guaranteed, with many unsavoury characters increasingly threatening the safety of your pet. Creating a safe haven for your family friend has never been more important.

As a breeder of traditional Rag Dolls and owner of Aussie Cat Enclosures Pat Lee knows what it means to offer your cat the best life possible.

Aussie Cat Enclosures offer a wide range of DIY and company installed cat enclosures because they believe in keeping your cat safe from other animals, vehicles and unsafe areas.

There are a range of enclosures that can be custom made to suit the size and style of your house and yard. Enclosures can be attached to a cat flap via tunnels to your home, or modules can be free standing.

You can also create a combination enclosure that has several levels and tunnels for your cat to roam through, allowing your cat to be able to enjoy the outdoors whilst keeping safe within the enclosure. Waterproof ‘roofing’ is also available to ensure your feline companion stays dry at all times.

No matter what sort of residence you live in, the friendly staff at Aussie Cat Enclosures can meet with you and discuss exactly what you and your pet need. The DIY Module Packs are simple for any handyman to install. Alternatively Aussie Cat Enclosures can install it for you too!

They are based in Queensland and will do a no obligation, free measure and quote on any of their cat enclosure systems within QLD. There is also a display of cat enclosures and cat poles for you to see in their factory, located in Redland Bay, QLD.

They offer a wide range of cat products including pet doors, transporters, and cat poles, to provide your cat with a more entertaining and safe environment.

So keep your cat and our wildlife safe by finding an Aussie Cat Enclosure that suits you and your cat best.

NOT JUST FOR LAUGHS…FOR THE ORANG-UTAN!
Wednesday, 21 July

Have a laugh to stop Orang-utans becoming extinct and to support rainforest rescue at the Currumbin RSL’s Comedy 'Ranga For Rangas' on
Wednesday 21st of July.

Four passionate orang-utan lovers and extroverted redheads, some natural some not, are putting on a night of laughs for those who want to support this cause. It may shock you that approximately 80% of suitable orang-utan natural habitat has been changed or destroyed, mainly by deforestation, fires, mining interest, and palm oil plantations. To aid in putting a stop to these practices, come along and fight for the rights of animals and forests that cannot fight for themselves.

The show will be Mc’d by Comedian Mandy Nolan, who is a supporter of rainforest rescue and who is not a natural red-head, but a natural orang-utan lover.

Gold FM’s Breakfast radio’s Bridget Daley is taking this opportunity to do some stand up comedy as she did early in her career, to support this cause. She will be joined by her Producer, stand up comedian Katrina Davidson. Katrina has performed in many places abroad and will show her support by taking you on a trip exploring her life with dry wit and a dark sense of humour.

Red-haired Comedian Fiona McGary will also join them to support orang-utan and rainforest protection. With a stand up comedy career spanning 10 years, both nationally and internationally, it is highly likely she will have you in tears and struggling to breathe.

To help save the orang-utans and their rainforests, you can purchase tickets for $20 at www.currumbinrsl.com.au or at the Currumbin RSL reception on (07) 55 347 999. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with the show beginning at 7:30pm. There will be a free kids club open until 10pm for kids over the age of five.

All profits from ticket sales will go towards Rainforest Rescue; www.rainforestrescue.org.au.

     THE BOY FROM OZ
Wednesday, 28 July

Spotlight Theatre Charity Night - The Boy From Oz
The Spotlight Theatre, Benowa
Wednesday, 28th July - 6.30pm onwards

Join the AWL at the Spotlight Theatre and enjoy community theatre at its very best.

The charity night helps to raise much needed funds for the welfare work that AWL undertake each year and will help us find homes for the thousands of abandoned animals left in our care.

The Boy From Oz is the most successful Australian musical ever and the only one to make it to Broadway. Plucked from a chorus in 1964 by none other than Judy Garland, Peter Allen not only married Liza but became the quintessence of a particular strain of 70's pop. This musical documentry follows his fabled career from the wilds of Australia to Reno Sweeny's and Carnegie Hall, a thirty year odyssey.

Help us make this night a success - invite your friends, family and neighbours to join in the nights fun.

Tickets are $20 and include supper, book early to avoid disappointment, phone 5509 9033 or email marketing@awlqld.com.au.

NEW PET RESORT AT WALT DISNEY WORLD

You can now take your cat or dog on holidays with you to Walt Disney World Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida!

Your pet can now stay in their own private lodge, the Best Friends Pet Care Resort, which has taken pet accommodation to a luxurious level.

The resort combines both indoor and outdoor

areas set on more than 50,000 square feet of land. Your pet can enjoy a generous 17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor area, 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor runs and areas to play, and a private dog park exclusively for the use of pet resort visitors and their dog.

Cats will be able to spend time in a separate “Kitty City” living area that is far away from the canine guests, to reduce stress and increase pleasure and relaxation, in two and four-room accommodation. All of the kitty rooms offer your pet complete comfort in a private atmosphere and will be thoroughly cleaned every day with hospital-grade cleaning products.

CEO of Best Friends Pet Care said their aim is “to ensure that pets staying with us have a fun, action-packed vacation – just like their families vacationing at Walt Disney World.”

     FIGHTING TO SAVE THE SEALS

Stop the 'World's Cruellest' Seal Cull!

The world's cruellest slaughter of seals takes place every year in Namibia, and is due to start again on July 1st. Australian-based fur and skins company, Hatem Yavuz, is directly implicated in this annual brutal slaughter.

Hatem Yavuz is the last remaining buyer of these dead seal pup skins to make them into fur coats.

Cape Fur Seals are directly related to the protected Fur Seals living on the southeast Australian coast and the Namibian Government has allowed 85,000 of these animals to be killed each year. Most pups are so young that they are still being nursed by their mothers. The terrified pups are rounded up, separated from their mothers and brutally clubbed to death.

The market for Namibian Cape Fur Seal skins has collapsed over recent years due to lack of demand and import bans in the European Union, the United States, Mexico and South Africa because of the cruelty involved in the sealing methods. As of 2008, Australian-based Hatem Yavuz is the only one company left buying seal skins from Namibia.

There is international pressure on Hatem Yavuz to stop funding this cull. Please add your voice and express your outrage to Hatem Yavuz for their culpability in animal cruelty, and call on them to commit to never again buying Namibian Cape Fur Seal skins.

A GLOBAL APPROACH TO ANIMAL WELFARE

Help the WSPCA achieve global recognition that animals matter, that they can feel pain and can suffer and that we have a responsibility to put an end to cruelty around the world. Your signature will let governments worldwide know a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare is vital for animals.

Improving animal welfare can also improve the welfare of people relying on these animals. Over a billion people directly depend on animals around the world for their livelihoods. People look to animals for companionship as well, and in many cases animals are considered part of the family.

For a global problem you need a global solution. Agreement on the importance of an issue affects people's attitudes, and people's attitudes affect their actions. A Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare will have a real, long-term impact on the welfare of billions of animals worldwide.

STOP JUMPS RACING [Featured in the Paws & Claws June E-News!]

Should this be the final straw for Jumps Racing?

Absolutely this should be outlawed. These poor horses are not only made to run the extensive distances but to jump in the process when probably exhausted. It is a shame the jockeys, owners and trainers can’t be made to run and jump these distances and see how far they would get before suffering fatigue over the hurdles!

L.W, NSW

NEW BREEDERS LICENSE SCHEME [ May E-News!]

Should the Breeder License Scheme go ahead?

Hi Paws & Claws,

I find this whole issue has been dealt with badly.

To start with public consultation has been extremely limited. The issue was advertised in the Bulletin during the week hidden away and then extremely hard to find on the Gold Coast City Council website. Submissions lodged were advised that public hearing would be held sometime in April or May. To date this has not happened and the laws have been passed through Council, with only the input of the AWL and a selected group.

I believe that without baning the sale of pets in pet shops, as is the case in the UK, it will only increase backyard breeders. These people exist now all around our state. I work in a shop where one lady had 6 litters by the end of February. She specialises in cross breeds and advertises in the paper and on the internet, pay in cash. How does the new laws stop her?

Don't get me wrong I am all for cross breeds and pure breeds having owned both. But there are health risks involved in both cases. We have people breeding dogs as young as 6 months without a concern for the welfare of the animal.

I believe that better education of pet owners, starting in schools and maybe even at childcare level would better help our animals and lessen the numbers that are euthanised every year. Cheaper de-sexing and microchipping would also be great help. Educate people that an animal can be desexed before having a season (bitches) and males do not suffer any problems by being desexed early.

There have also been a large number of registered breeders being raided by the RSPCA and Biosecurity of late for the bad / over breeding processes. So if the licensed body to which they belong cannot assist in halting this; what hope is there for a Council run breed law?
