GETTING
TO KNOW YOU |
Three
cubs in Vietnam begin integration |
The
most recent rescues in Vietnam brought three very young
cubs into our care at the Tam Dao Moon Bear Rescue Centre
– brother and sister Angus (previously nicknamed
Vadar) and Maggie, and the tiniest bear yet, cheeky
little Taurus. These baby bears have been spared the
life-long torture of a bile farm, but cannot ever be
released into the wild again as they will be without
the skills to fend for themselves, and in danger of
being illegally re-captured for the bile industry.
However, everybody needs company and
so, with a view to integrating the three cubs permanently,
we set up “play-dates” last week to see
how they would get along. We’re delighted to
say that it’s all going very well!
to enjoy a video of the antics of Angus, Maggie and
Taurus as they get to know one another.
We tried Taurus and Angus the first
day. Taurus was very excited, and then quickly alarmed
when he realized that his new toy could pin him to
the ground and play-bite. However, the next day was
a great improvement, with Taurus much more prepared.
He took the high ground immediately, and was ready
for action! He was taken down of course, by his formidable
opponent with the great weight advantage of a kilo
or two, but he was able to get away and his confidence
has been growing ever since.
After that we thought Taurus was ready
for the big time, so he was introduced to Maggie (who’s
much rougher than Angus), but on her first visit,
she was much more interested in exploring his room,
and playing with his toys. Poor Taurus didn’t
know what to do – he was very excited that she
was there, but didn’t know whether to stay up
high where he felt safe, or go down and try to play.
It was amazing to watch this tiny bear try to come
to a big decision! They did finally meet, and Maggie
was not as rough with him as we thought she would
be, so all went better than expected.
|
|

Angus and Maggie lost no time
in training the staff once they arrived at the sanctuary!

A
tiny scrap of a bear, Taurus weighed just over 2kg when
rescued.

Now bigger and stronger, Taurus
and Angus enjoy their favourite game of wrestling!
|
| We
now do sessions with all three together – still
on Taurus’s turf of course – and they are
all making great progress. Taurus does really well until
someone sits on him and he can’t get up! He can
handle it though, and as soon as he breaks free, takes
the high ground again and gets back in the game. Maggie
and Angus sometimes play with each other more and ignore
Taurus a bit, and he can’t stand it. He’s
so excited when they’re in his room, and he wants
to play too, but he’s smart enough to try and
keep the upper hand.
The
sessions are daily, and the amount of time is determined
by the cubs’ behaviour during the session. If
things get a little too rough, or Taurus starts looking
tired we end it on a positive note and so keep the cubs
looking forward to the next meeting.

GOLD
COAST MAYOR RECEIVES INAUGURAL COMPASSIONATE CITIZEN AWARD
|
 |
|
Animals
Australia has awarded its inaugural Compassionate Citizen
Award to Australian sporting legend and Gold Coast Mayor
Ron Clarke for speaking out against the cruelty of rodeos.
In
an interview last week Mayor Clarke publicly described
rodeos as "horrifying" and "human entertainment
at the expense of animals". Clarke has vowed to
oppose any request to acquire council funds for the
promotion of rodeos.
"As
a revered Australian sportsman Mayor Clarke is in a
very good position to state what is sport and what is
animal abuse. His public opposition to rodeos will resound
through the Gold Coast community and hopefully stop
many people from attending the rodeo at the Carrara
Equestrian Ground this Friday night," said Glenys
Oogjes Animals Australia's Executive Director.
|
|
Referring
to a rodeo he witnessed at the Gold Coast Convention
and Exhibition Centre two years ago, Clarke recalled,
"I hated seeing what they do to animals to make
them buck. They (pro rodeo people) say that they love
bucking, so why do they stop bucking when the riders
are off and the belts around them are loosened?"
In
rodeos, naturally placid animals such as horses and
cattle are physically provoked into displaying 'wild'
behaviour. Straps are pulled tightly around the animals'
flanks causing them to violently 'buck' in an attempt
to free themselves of the 'flank strap' and rider. This
can result in horrific injuries and even deaths, often
in front of children.
Animals
Australia is urging Gold Coasters to follow Mayor Clarke's
compassionate lead this week and not support the privately
run 'Bulls on the Beach' rodeo at Carrara Equestrian
Ground on Friday.
Executive
Director of Animals Australia Glenys Oogjes added, "Rodeos
equate to bullying animals for 'fun' and have no place
in today's society. Ron Clarke epitomises the outstanding
sporting tradition of fair play we are proud of in this
country. It is no wonder that he is so appalled by the
cruelty of rodeos and has taken a stand on behalf of
these animals. All who care about animal welfare are
grateful to Mayor Clarke for speaking out. He is a very
worthy recipient of Animals Australia's inaugural Compassionate
Citizen Award."
Animals
Australia's Compassionate Citizen Award recognises the
actions of individuals that promote compassion towards
animals. |

| GOLD COAST RESIDENTS WARNED
ABOUT RAFFLE SCAM |
|
|
|
Gold
Coast residents are being asked to contact police
if they are approached in their home by unauthorized
people selling raffle tickets on Guide Dogs Queensland’s
behalf.
Guide Dogs Queensland is warning
Gold Coast residents about a bogus raffle scam,
after discovering residents in Labrador and Edens
Landing were recently approached by a young couple
purporting to sell raffle tickets on behalf of
‘Guide Dogs for the Blind’.
Guide Dogs Queensland Chief Executive
Officer Chris Laine said the association held
its annual doorknock (Pawknock) appeal in February
and all volunteers could be identified by official
GDQ badges.
“It’s extremely disappointing
that these people have taken advantage of our
good name and the support Guide Dogs Queensland
receives on the Gold Coast,” Ms Laine said.
“We hope that by issuing
this statement we will be able to prevent any
other people falling victim to this scam.”
|
|
|
Ms Laine said the association took fraud seriously
and registered all volunteers to ensure the community
could donate to fundraising campaigns in good
faith.
She said Guide Dogs Queensland received less
than seven per cent government funding, and relied
on the community to deliver services including
Guide Dogs and White Cane free of charge to Queenslanders,
who were blind and vision impaired.

| STIMULUS HELPING TO SAVE
LIVES |
|
|
|

|
|
As stimulus payments are rolling into
bank accounts the National Desexing Network (NDN) is
receiving calls from people who realise the investment
value of desexing their furry family members.
Over 75% of dogs and cats that end
up in pounds are undesexed, pet owners could save themselves
impoundment fees, time, and stress by desexing their
pets. Most importantly they can also save lives.
|
|
There
are already not enough homes for the cats and dogs in
our pounds and shelters and the slowing economy means
even more are being surrendered.
If
people would just desex their pets before that first
litter we could save so many more lives. It’s
a once in a lifetime procedure with a lifetime worth
of benefits.
All
the cats and dogs in pounds and shelters were once cute
fluffy kittens and bouncy playful puppies. Once that
cuteness factor is gone the chances of finding a home
become much harder.
The
only difference between those cute pups and kittens
produced by peoples pets and the cats and dogs needing
homes in shelters is about 18 months

Pet
Airways, launched the first pet-only airline specifically
designed for the safe and comfortable transportation
of pets. The first pet flights were scheduled for July
14th of 2009. On Pet Airways, all pets travel
in the main cabin not in the cargo hold. Serving 5 cities
to start - New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver
and Los Angeles - Pet Airways plans to expand nationwide
with easily accessible pet check-in lounges to serve
its “pawsengers” in major metropolitan areas.
According
to Dan Wiesel, President/CEO of Pet Airways, “Currently,
most pets traveling by air are transported in the cargo
hold and are handled as baggage. The experience is frightening
to the pets, and can cause severe emotional and physical
harm, even death. This is not what most pet owners want
to subject their pets to, but they have had no other
choice, until now."
Pet
Airways ensures pets are in the good hands of people
who love and know how to take care of pets. From the
moment a pet is dropped off at a Pet Lounge, the pet
is always under the care of trained Pet Attendants.
Monitored by Pet Attendants, pets will fly in planes
that are fully-lit, climate-controlled and have the
proper level of fresh air circulation that pets require.
Pawsengers will be boarded and de-boarded from planes
as quickly as possible, never left in the cold or heat,
and depending on transit time, will be offered toilet
facilities, food and water as necessary during stops.
Pet Parents will be assured of sensitive, careful handling
and the peace of mind that their pets are well looked
after by people who care as much about their pets as
they do.

| SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ANIMAL
CRUELTY |
|
|
|
FORMER
High Court judge Michael Kirby has called for tougher
sentencing for cruelty to animals and greater public
awareness of intensive farming practices.
Mr Kirby said Australians needed to
be made aware of the conditions animals were kept in
and to understand that animal welfare legislation did
not offer any protection to agricultural stock.
"I don't believe the people of
Australia know the facts that are revealed in this book,
and they should know them," Mr Kirby said at the
launch of a book on animal law this week.
|
|

|
|
"If only the people knew the pain
the animals go through, the cruelty that is inflicted
on sentient animals, they would take action."
Mr Kirby said many would be shocked
to learn that intensively farmed chickens are kept in
a space equivalent to the size of a piece of A4 paper
and that most sows spend their lives in metal stalls
that are so small they can't take a step forward or
backwards. He said the book, Animal Law in Australasia,
highlighted the need for tougher sentencing for animal
cruelty, and that the examples used were astonishing.
The maximum penalty for animal cruelty
in Victoria is 12 months in jail or a $13,600 fine.
In aggravated cruelty incidents, leading to the death
or serious disablement of an animal, the penalties are
doubled to $27,200 or 24 months in jail.
The launch of the book, edited by Peter
Sankoff and Steven White, was part of the Voiceless
Animal Law lecture series.

| THE TIME HAS COME TO RECOGNISE
BULL FIGHTING AS AN INHUMAN FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT |
|
|
|
Every
year 250,000 bulls die slow and torturous deaths as
a result of the bullfighting industry.
Spain's annual bullfighting
season got underway just this week. Help end the inhumane
treatment of bulls by banning bullfighting today. »
While many of us imagine the matador piercing the heart
of the bull with one quick movement, in reality, the
bull is repeatedly stabbed, skewered and slowly weakened
as it bleeds to death.
In today's modern society, bullfighting is no longer
an acceptable form of entertainment. In fact, there
are millions of Spaniards and people around the world
who strongly condemn bullfighting and are actively working
to stop the brutality against the animals.
Help stop the gruesome killing of hundred of thousands
of bulls each year.
Thanks for taking action!
