. . . The Animal Welfare League in desperate need . . .

The Animal Welfare League of Queensland committee, staff, volunteers and supporters are devastated at the loss of the warehouse and logistics centre that housed food, bedding, and equipment for their re-homing centers and Op-shops.

The fire broke out on the 27th of February throughout the early hours of the morning and tore through the warehouse causing more than $1million of damage. The warehouse is irreparable meaning the charity’s logistical hub is destroyed.

AWL QLD Public Relations Manager Gabrielle Wheaton said the warehouse fire’s effects leaves the animal charity in a desperate position and will impinge on the shelter’s operating capacity for months to come.

“It will most likely take 12 months to two years to rebuild what we lost,” says Miss Wheaton.

“The Warehouse was not just the operational hub for the AWL, as it was out primary depot for processing donated goods for all out Op-shops, but it was also the emotional heart of the charity, which has now more than 50 years of archives.”

“Last year marked our 50th anniversary of saving the lives of abandoned and unwanted animals, and it’s heartbreaking to think all those years of history are now little more than ash.”

All goods are gone including furniture, clothes, pet food and bedding. Also around $50,000 in marketing and educational materials was destroyed.

Charity equipment was also destroyed including tents, barbeques kits and promotional brochures, meaning the charity will be unable to hold fundraising events.

With this logistic warehouse gone, the AWL has limited space to store bedding and food for the cats and dogs living in re-homing centers.

Thankfully numerous organizations around the Gold Coast and Brisbane have been generous in offering to donate temporary storage facilities, meaning items donated to the AWL QLD can be stored.

“People have been so generous,” says Miss Wheaton.

“We have even had people call up and offer to leave their own cars out of their garages just to give us some space to store donations. We would like to thank everyone so much.”

Miss Wheaton said she was confident the AWL would survive with the support of the community.

“For the past 50 years the AWL has been caring for Gold Coast animals and it now really needs the Gold Coast community to give back when it’s needed most,” she says.

“The Gold Coast community has helped us become the best shelter in Australia, so I’m sure it will support us in our time of need.”

PLEASE DONATE WHAT YOU CAN
Here are some supplies on the AWL’s donation wish list:

- Dog and cat tinned food
- Dog and cat dry food
- Bedding
- Unwanted furniture (bric-a-brac)
- Clothing that can be used to replenish their stock and sell at the AWL Op-sho

. . . So your dog is dominant? . . .

Your dog is bold in personality, has a habit of humping your leg, bowling you over on its way through the door, stands over another dog, fights with another dog, grabs your hand with its mouth for attention or jumps up on you and barks. We as people have been reliably told for years now that this is a dominant dog and we must show the dog who is the “boss”, because if we don’t, then our dog will dominate us.

Dominance was traditionally applied to dogs, not allowing them to eat first, not allowing them on our beds or couches and using physical force to get our dogs to submit to our commands. However, in the last 20 years there has been a slow turnaround as science and knowledge catch up and many of the formerly accepted methods have been proven incorrect.

It is critical to understand that there is very little research done on human-dog relationships, so how can we base this theory on us and our beloved pets?

We now understand that dogs like us need rules and that we as a human need to show great leadership. This means being consistent, persistent and above all emotionally calm.

As an owner you feed the dog when you’re ready at a time that suits you. If you invite your dog up onto your lap for a cuddle, make it wait to put a lead on, that’s your decision. If you call the dog in first to lock a door behind you, so what? That does not make you subservient. What it makes you is in control. Dogs are like children in behaviour, they need to be taught the basics of manners and rules that govern your home.

What are you looking for in a trainer?

There are trainers out there who still advocate that negative harsh correction training is the only way to get your dog to “obey”. Methods include jerking a dog by a check chain, kneeing your dog in the chest, shoving hands down a dogs throat, use of electric collars, pushing and yelling NO at the dog or throwing things at it. This inappropriate training increases stress and dogs with varying forms of anxiety may increase their behaviours such as barking, howling, cringing or wetting.

There are many good reward based trainers outthere who are qualified and use behaviour modification programs in order to help these dogs. Many people think reward based training is just food. It is not. It is based around kind gentle human ways to treat a dog and uses a dog’s natural resources such as food, toys or games to get the dog to co-operate for the owner. It uses the basics of behaviour, reward highly what you want and ignore what you don’t want. Much like a child who gets rewarded for being good and quiet and is ignored or timed out for inappropriate behaviour such as throwing a tantrum.

Australia has a fast growing professional group of trainers who have trained under Delta Society Australia. This national and international group are qualified and belong to a professional body.

It is critical that you the owner of your beloved pet do your homework and find a trainer that suits your needs. Understand that our world is ever evolving and we as trainers are always learning. What we do know is that your dog is more likely a bossy bully or a pushy pup and needs to learn basic manners so that it can understand you and live comfortably with you.

The Dominance theory is dead, lets put it to rest once and for all.

. . . Shannon’s Paw-traits are Purr-fect! . . .

Shannon West has been creating pet paw-traits for over three years, yet her love of animals goes far beyond painting them. Having worked as a vet nurse, and been a volunteer with Friends of the Pound Tweed Inc. since 2006, Shannon’s passion for animals clearly shines through.

Shannon’s volunteering provides assistance at the Tweed Pound by caring for the animals with feeding, grooming and giving them comfort. Shannon also foster cares for some animals rescued by the pound.

Her devotion to animals is the reason why she started her Pet Paw-trait business. She is a pet portrait perfectionist, creating original animal artworks using high quality acrylic paints on canvases of all shapes and sizes.

Shannon prides herself in creating outstanding artworks and her customers testimonials speak for themselves:

Dear Shannon,

The portrait of Paris is FANTASTIC! We feel as if there are two Paris's in the house now, it is so realistic. The detail in the background sets him off so well. Thanks ever so much, we’ll treasure it forever.

The Harmel Family.

Dear Shannon,

'It was paw-fect!' Harry has pride of place on the lounge wall, so now I feel his presence and that I haven't lost him at all. Thank you again.

Regards,
Christine C.

     RSPCA QLD ROARING '20S BALL
Friday, 19 March

Roaring ‘20s Ball to raise vital funds for the RSPCA!

Dust off your Mary Jane’s, slip into your best frock and brush up on your Charleston. The annual RSPCA Qld Gala Ball is on once again at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre Friday 19 March.

This is the sixth consecutive Gala Ball hosted by RSPCA Qld. This year the event will be compered by the charming Loretta Ryan and Moyd Kay from radio 4BH 882, and includes a stack of entertainment including casino games, musical performances and live and silent auctions.

RSPCA Qld spokesperson Andrea Fagg said based on past experience it’s sure to be a night to remember.

“The Gala Ball is always a lot of fun, but this year we’ve themed the event around the roaring ‘20s so it’s sure to be a hoot!”

“We’re hoping that our guests will get into the spirit of the evening and come along dressed as gangsters,

flappers, daddies and dames. The look is all about fringing, feathers, beading and of course pinstripes for the guys” Ms Fagg said.

Proceeds from the event will help the RSPCA continue to care for all creatures great and small. RSPCA Qld has an annual operating budget of $22.9 million and receives less than 2% government funding.

     ANIMAL COMPANIONS ENHANCING HUMAN HEALTH

A recent study in the US is finding many tangible physiological benefits to pet ownership.

The study shows that pets can lower stress and blood pressure, and dogs can motivate activity beyond a daily walk, improving human health.

Over a 50 year study, human-animal interaction expert, Professor Erika Friedmann, observed and monitored cat and dog owners who are suffering from mild hypertension to determine the effect pets have on blood pressure levels.

Throughout Friedmann's study, pet owners were tracked every 20 minutes of their waking hours on three different days over a three-month period using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. The participants also recorded how often their pets were with them.

After analysing her preliminary data, Friedmann’s findings are showing that pet owners had lower blood pressure when their pets were present in a variety of situations.

Friedmann also found that people were more comfortable engaging in small talk when a friendly animal was present. Director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University in Indiana, Alan Beck, agrees with the study’s findings and brands pets as a ‘positive distraction’, stimulating enough to hold our attention without being stressful.

"We're in the present (with a pet), and we can't worry about the past or the future - so much of anxiety is the mind worrying about the past or the future."

Friedmann agrees, explaining that a pet forces people to focus on something outside of themselves and their problems, even if only for a short period of time.

Having a furry companion around can also motivate people to exercise and increase fitness levels.

Rebecca Johnson, Director of the Research Center for Human Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri, studied residents from retirement facilities who walked dogs five days a week for 12 weeks and compared them with other retirees who walked with human companions.

The study found that the dog-walking group gradually increased their speed by 28 per cent, whereas the human walking group increased their speed by only four per cent.

In addition, the dog-walking group grew more enthusiastic and more motivated, requesting an earlier start so they could beat the heat and provide their dogs with longer walks.

The human group, in contrast, often discouraged each other from walking and complained about such factors as the heat, says Johnson.

"There are physical benefits if you make a commitment to your dog. You just have to realize animals need to be walked, reinforcement from the animals and exercise feels good." says Johnson.

     RSPCA SHUTS DOWN PUPPY FARM

This is a sad topic for all of those dog lovers out there. The RSPCA has raided a puppy farm at Beremboke, north of Anakie in Geelong owned by Leslie Paxton and Melinda Pryor.

The investigation follows a damning report, conducted by the Moorabool Shire, which alleged the Paxtons kept 59 dogs in shocking conditions on the property.

The report revealed many dogs were kept in cramped cages covered in faeces.

Some dogs were left for dead, as carcasses had been left to rot on the ground.

In other developments, neighbours described the Paxtons' farm as an eyesore as a Geelong man says he warned animal welfare authorities two years ago about dogs chained to wrecked cars there.

Mr Paxton has previously said the shire report was a lie.

RSPCA chief Heather Neil said puppy farms were “at the absolute bottom of the barrel”.

"Most Australians would be appalled if they knew where many puppies actually came from," Ms Neil said.

Animal liberationists secretly filmed the kennels and found puppies and dogs in appalling conditions.

At a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing on Friday March 5th, the Beremboke puppy farm was effectively ordered to shut down. Leslie Paxton and Melinda Pryor have been threatened with jail time if they don't follow orders, which limits them to only five dogs on their property, north of Anakie.

Have your say! Should they still be allow to keep animals?

DOG LEADS OWNER TO ASSAULT VICTIM

A man who was severely attacked in a West Auckland park was lucky enough to be spotted by a dog, and rescued by Emergency Services.

Gary McNelly and his wife Claudine were walking their three dogs, Alice, Tui and Jeff, around 7am on Sunday morning when Gary’s dog Alice’s ears pricked up and she began to growl.

"We looked in the direction she was looking and there's this body," Mr McNelly said.

Not knowing what state the young man was in, Mrs McNelly's wife backed away with the dogs while her husband approached him.

Slipping in and out of consciousness, the man managed to say his name and give his address while Mrs McNelly and the three dogs waited at the public toilets to wave down the ambulance.

The young man has been move out of intensive care but is being kept under close observation.

LIZARDS ARE THE NEW PET OF CHOICE

Keeping a lizard as a pet has its advantages, resulting in them becoming hugely popular in Australia.

One of the main advantages of keeping a lizard over more traditional pets is the small space required for many species, which makes them ideal for people living in apartment.

Dr Robert Johnson, President of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Unusual and Exotic Pets special interest group says the interest in pet reptiles is on the rise.

“The reptile pet industry in Australia is worth as much as $60 million annually, with the inland bearded dragon and the blue tongue lizard the most popular pets.”

They do not require as much maintenance as some other pets and most of the common species get used to humans very easily.

While reptiles are low maintenance pets, in Australia it is necessary to have a license to keep a lizard or any other reptile.

Do you have a pet lizard? Or a pet snake or turtle?

BREEDERS LICENSE SCHEME [Featured in the Paws & Claws February E-News!]

Should the Breeder License Scheme go ahead?
Breeders of purebred, registered litters have to pass a test and pay quite a lot to be registered, so I agree with the licence requirement, but feel that it would be impossible to enforce. I know where every puppy I have bred lives and they have to be returned to me if the owner ever parts with them. Registered breeders (with the Canine Control Council) have a code of ethics to follow, but that is not enforced anyway :'(

I know of breeders who will breed a bitch four times, despite the "guidelines" which state that it should be less than that.

- Merryl

Absolutely. There are so many "back yard breeders" out there who are mini puppy mills and then there are the owners who want their bitch to have "just one litter" before they might get her desexed and the macho males in the family who refuse to have their "little boys' desexed. Reputable breeders would not have any qualms about being registered...it should be nationwide.

Cheers,

- Chrissy, Qld
