Zimbabwe’s Voiceless Victims

Imagine having to flee your home taking only what you could fit in your vehicle and driving  away leaving behind your beloved pets and your livestock, seeing them for the last time, not knowing which misfortune lay ahead for them, as you drive past angry armed mobs. In Zimbabwe that is exactly what hundreds and hundreds of families in rural areas are facing with the country’s land resettlement program.

Most people know what happened to the farmers but very few people have any idea what happened to the animals, and I believe they bore the viciousness of the farm invasions. The farmers drove off and the animals were left behind, and it was taken out on them because they belong to the farmer, said Meryl Harrison, ZSPCA’s Chief Inspector for the past five years.

Meryl explains how some families, after going into town, would return to find the roads barricaded off. They were kept away from their home and all their possessions, with no knowledge of what was going to happen. Some houses were burnt down, torn apart, and ransacked, while some farm animals and pets were made to suffer torturous deaths as a word of warning to other farmers to get off their farms with haste.

Risky Business At the Bottom of the World

"Sail forth - steer for the deep waters only, Reckless O soul, exploring, I with thee and thou with me, For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go.
And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.
"
- Walt Whitman

We realize that governments don't view saving whales to be as important as round the world yacht racing or offshore fishing, so we were not surprised to hear that New Zealand and Australia have stated that they will not be prepared to rescue any Sea Shepherd crew in the event of accident or attacks from Japanese whalers.

The Australian government has announced they will not send a Customs vessel to the Southern Ocean this year and the entire Australian Navy has been tied to the docks and the sailors sent home for two months in a cost saving measure by the Australian Government.

Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett has said he has allocated $6 million for non-lethal research on whales yet he says there will be no government ships in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. It's a mystery how this non-lethal research is going to be carried out without observations in the field?

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully told the media that New Zealand "cannot underwrite the welfare and safety of every individual who is in the Ross Sea."

Not that we asked, nor do we expect any help, but it is interesting that both Australia and New Zealand are making a point in advance of saying that we are on our own this year.

New Zealand and Australia have spent millions rescuing yachtsmen, fishermen and whalers. In February 2007, the Japanese government asked New Zealand to help a crewman who fell gravely ill near the Ross Sea. A New Zealand rescue helicopter airlifted him to a hospital.

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

This year there will be no Australian or New Zealand ships in the waters of the Australian Antarctic Territory - only Japanese whaling ships, possibly a Japanese gunboat and the Steve Irwin and our crew.

But we're not naïve. This will be our fourth voyage to the Southern Ocean. We are fully aware of how remote the area is, and we are completely aware of how dangerous the waters and the situation is, with icebergs, unpredictable weather, and violently defensive Japanese whalers.

We know the risks and we are prepared to accept them. The alternative is unacceptable. To do nothing as a thousand whales are condemned to die a violent death from the cruel and illegal explosive harpoons is not an option for us.

Our ship is equipped with the best safety equipment available. We have a medical doctor onboard, we have adequate medical supplies and we have crewmembers trained as EMT's. When our crews go out in the boats they are wearing wetsuits under their survival suits. We take precautions. But we are not foolish enough to believe that a disaster could not happen in these cold, lonely, remote, and stormy waters.

But that is the risk that we are willing to take because the only other alternative is to do nothing and that is the path taken by  most governments and cowards. And how could we die better than facing fearful odds while defending the life of the gentle giants of the sea?

But with all the talk about risks and dangers and all the talk of violence between whale defenders and whale killers, we must not lose sight of the fact that we are not talking about risk when it comes to the whales

"We know the risks and we are prepared to accept them. The alternative is unacceptable. To do nothing as a thousand whales are condemned to die a violent death from the cruel and illegal explosive harpoons is not an option for us."

With the whales we are talking certainty of death. Unless we intervene, 935 Piked (Minke) and 50 Fin whales will die an agonizing death. We may not be able to save them all but we can save as many as we can with the resources we have available to us. If Greenpeace had agreed to work in cooperation with us, with two ships we could have the opportunity to shut down the killers 100%. But Greenpeace despite raising millions of dollars to send a ship down to the Southern Oceans has taken their cue from Peter Garrett and like Garrett they have reneged on their promises. Garrett gets to remain in office despite the disappointment of the voters who elected him to defend the whales and Greenpeace, well, Greenpeace gets to keep the money.

And the whales! The whales are the collateral damage to the selfish political and economic agendas of government and big business environmentalism.

And they will both condemn us as we head south. The governments will denounce us and call us lawless and Greenpeace will scathingly attack our tactics knowing that if they call us violent often enough, people will come to believe it.

As the Nazi Satanic genius of marketing Joseph Goebbels once so famously said, "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it,"

The questions that Peter Garrett and the governments of Australia and New Zealand must be ready for is simply how are they going to respond if Australian and New Zealand citizens are captured by the whalers? Will they stand by and do nothing as these citizens are hauled back to Japan, accused of terrorism for defending whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary? How will they respond if Australian and New Zealand citizens are injured or killed by violence from the Japanese whalers? Will they ignore them? Will they continue to use the excuse that they are taking the "diplomatic" approach? Will they just simply say, "we told you not to interfere?"

And how will the governments of the Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada, the United States, South Africa, Sweden, Bermuda, and Hungary respond in what will clearly

become an international incident if anyone of our crew are injured, killed or captured by these whalers?

And so we see whales being blown apart and concussion grenades and bullets fired at us by people who have the audacity to call us violent for throwing rotten butter on their decks. They accuse us of throwing "acid" on them and of course this leads the imagination of the scientifically challenged to visualize people screaming in pain from disfiguring sulfuric acid whereas rotten butter also known as butyric acid is less acidic than beer, orange juice and milk.

When Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett and Foreign Minister Stephen Smith say that they deplore any violence in the Southern Ocean they completely ignore the most violent action of all - the cruel slaughter of the whales.

Blood is being spilled, tons of blood and lives are being lost, nearly a thousand sentient beings, cruelty is being practiced and the misery and suffering the whales endure is horrific.

But instead of condemning this violence, the bureaucrats scream in indignation because Sea Shepherd crewmembers tossed some rotten butter on the deck of a whale killing ship. Instead of condemning the illegal activities of the Japanese whalers, the bureaucrats make exaggerated accusations of eco-terrorism against Sea Shepherd to which we can only respond with an "either arrest us or shut up."

In over 31 years of campaigns, not a single person has been injured by a Sea Shepherd action. Not a single member of our crew has ever been convicted of a crime nor have we been sued. Why? Because we are not the criminals.

We hunt down criminals and we intervene against their illegal actions and unfortunately most governments stand with those who profit from the destruction of the natural world even when those activities are illegal.

It was not the British government and the British Navy that shut down piracy in the Caribbean in the 11th Century. It was Henry Morgan - a pirate.

Sometimes you need a pirate to deal with pirates.

HONG KONG — Quietly, without the usual bon voyage fanfare and Buddhist blessings, a Japanese whaling ship set sail last week on its yearly hunt for the great whales of the Southern Ocean. If the hunting is good, the ship, Nisshin Maru, will haul in more than 1,000 whales.

Rescue a Homeless Guinea Pig this Christmas Season

Australian Cavy Sanctuary (ACS) shelters are currently at maximum capacity with 117 guinea pigs on the Coast, around 180 in Brisbane 80 in the Ipswich shelter. Public helped is needed and very much appreciated. If you are considering buying a guinea pig this holiday season, why not adopt and rescue a guinea pig from ACS?

ACS is a non profit and non funded Community Purpose Organisation run by a dedicated team of individuals and volunteers across Australia who are truly passionate about the welfare and awareness of guinea pigs. ACS accept any ill, injured and found guinea pigs that people from the public may wish to surrender to our shelters. They are then rehabilitated if required and placed up for adoption to good homes.

To make an appointment to come and meet our precious piggies our adoption terms and duty of care conditions must first be read and agreed with. You will find them at:

www.australiancavysanctuary.com/adopt.htm

We prefer our piggies to be kept indoors or on a veranda or somewhere where they can see you and you can see them as we find that piggies get forgotten when left out the back in a lawn hutch.

Guinea Pigs must be kept in a cool shady spot throughout summer as they will die from heat stroke very quickly.

If you have your Guinea pigs outside please also make sure that they are kept out of the rain.

Please note: ACS guinea pigs are NOT to be used for breeding, we wish for only the best loving new forever homes for our precious adoptable guinea pigs.

Whale Season Volunteers thanked

Cat owners accidentally poisoning their pets

Volunteers who have played an integral role in averting potentially fatal whale entanglements in shark control equipment along the Gold Coast were recognised for their efforts with the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin.

This year volunteers again trained to watch over Gold Coast waters and provide accurate information about possible animal entanglements in shark control equipment.

Sea World Director of Marine Sciences, Trevor Long, said that the volunteers provide a marvellous service to the Gold Coast and the community.

During the past 12 months, the Gold Coast saw just one humpback whale entanglement, which, with the help of volunteers was successfully released.

With summer coming, vets are worried about the number of cats they are seeing that have been accidentally poisoned by common flea treatments available in supermarkets.

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is telling cat owners to take extra care when buying flea treatments for their moggy as the weather warms up.

“Some spot-on flea products for dogs available at supermarkets contain a chemical called permethrin,” said Dr Mark Lawrie, President of the AVA. “The treatment is safe for dogs but it’s really dangerous when used on cats. People poison their cat by accident - buying a flea treatment they think will cost less and not reading the label properly."

“We would really like to see these treatments only made available through vets so that proper instructions could be given to each buyer and cats don’t suffer unnecessarily.“

Anyone who spots a whale or other marine animal tangled in shark netting should call the
24-hour Shark Hotline on 1800 806 891.

"If you have any questions or aren’t sure which product to use, talk to your vet"

Cat deaths linked to pet food

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box to fund food for animals for free.

This doesn't cost you a thing.

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site!
Please pass it along to people you know.

UNEXPLAINED chronic illness and death among Sydney cats has been linked to a gourmet imported pet food withdrawn from stores over the past three weeks.

Cat neurologist, Georgina Child, said the only factor that linked all the cats was a specialist pet food called Orijen, which is imported through a Canadian company, Champion Petfoods.

The marketing manager of Champion Petfoods, Peter Muhlenfeld, confirmed yesterday the cat deaths had been traced back to Orijen's dry cat food, and the problem appeared to be restricted to Australia.

The company is investigating whether irradiation upon entry into Australia was the source of the contamination.

A step in the right direction
RSPCA QLD

RSPCA Qld CEO Mark Townend has called the new Animal Management Bill introduced into State Parliament yesterday a “step in the right direction.”

“We applaud the Government for tackling the difficult and contentious issues involved in managing the cat and dog problems in Queensland. Having said that, we don’t think it has addressed many of the concerns raised by a number of interested parties and animal welfare bodies,” he said.

“We’re very disappointed that unregistered breeders will still be allowed to sell dogs that have not been de-sexed to the general public. This will enable puppy farms, where dogs are often kept in horrific conditions, to continue to operate. The RSPCA and other welfare groups lobbied for a breeder control permit system. This has not happened and a major opportunity to quell the number of unwanted dogs and cats has been lost. It’s a cop out and the Government know it! We will continue to press for compulsory de-sexing. The so called experts who say the

benefits are unproven have obviously never had to work in an animal shelter. They should get out from behind their desks and experience the real world.”

Mr Townend said he was also disappointed that Councils would still be allowed to euthanase certain breeds of dogs, such as pit bulls, based on a flawed "points system". “We believe you should punish the deed not the breed,” he said.

“Many innocent dogs, who never displayed any aggression and were beloved family pets, were destroyed because of a points system that is at best inconclusive.”

However Mr Townend praised the introduction of compulsory cat registration and micro-chipping and said the RSPCA was looking forward to seeing the results of the controlled animal management trials funded by the State Government in four Queensland local Government areas.

Cats need Condoms!
Gold Coast Vet Dr Kevin Cruickshank appeals to the community to protect their cat against the deadly disease Feline Aids (FIV). Felines can carry the disease for up to 10 years, and unless they are 100% indoor cats, no kitty is safe. November was Feline Awareness Month, and Dr Cruikshank is encouraging every cat owner to get their cat tested for FIV. For full story and more info on FIV click here.

A Dog's Purpose (from a six-year old)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolf hound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life... like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply. Love generously.

Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps. Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be Silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

My name is Lisa and I was inspired to create Animal Angels whilst going through a period of time where I needed to go on holidays but could not find carers to take care of my pets in my home. I didn't want my babies going to a kennel, outside of their special places that they liked to be in - especially since I would be away.
That is why I am passionate about

designing care packages with you that covers your needs and the needs of your pet/s.
Where possible we offer the same consistent carer for the duration of the service and you and your pet will ALWAYS get to meet with the carers before any care is undertaken. This is so you can be happy with the carer and can see how the carer interacts with your pet.
