| LASTEST NEWS
FOR ANIMALS AFFECTED BY THE DISASTER IN SAMOA |
|
|
|
The earthquake and tsunami that struck
Samoa last week has had a devastating effect for animals
and humans. While people mourn the deaths of their loved
ones, struggle to find shelter for their families, and
try to put their lives back together again, the animals
are struggling to fend for themselves.
The WSPA have teams on the ground in both American Samoa
and Western Samoa. The WSPA's Disaster Relief and Assessment
teams will be working to deliver basic veterinary attention
and deliver food to over 1,000 surviving dogs in the
tsunami affected areas.
If
you haven't already done so, please make an urgent donation
to help these animals in desparate need by clicking

The
2009 Paws & Claws Awards
"Celebrating
the relationship between people and animals" |
The
Paws & Claws Awards are dedicated to pay tribute
and gratitude to the fantastic people within the Pet
& Animal Industry that make a difference to our
lives and the lives of our animals.
The aim of the awards is to recognize high achievers
within the industry to show our appreciation for their
hard work, commitment and unrelenting passion.
|
|
|
| The
results for the Third Annual Paws & Claws awards are
in.
Simply
Purrfect Cattery was awarded the Best
Mate award, for the loving care and attention
that they give to all their feline friends. Owner, Carol
Wregg, was pleasantly surprised as the awards team showed
up to the cattery’s front door with big grins and the
golden trophy.
‘I
didn’t think we’d win with so many great nominees involved.
Thank you so much, this is great. I’m thrilled!’
The
Best Vet award went to Drs Kevin and
Fiona Cruickshank of the Gold Coast Vet Surgery.
Dr Kevin is ecstatic to share this trophy with his team.
‘It
is a whole team effort that made this possible. We are
like family, the staff, the pets and the owners; we
are all a big family,’ said Dr Kevin.
Their
dedicated vet nurse, Olivia Gerry also
took home the Best Vet Nurse award.
‘Thank you so much! This is wonderful, I don’t what
to say – I’m in shock,’ said Olivia whilst posing for
the camera crew.
The
next stop was a family owned business, The Pet
Barn Nerang, who took the Outstanding
Pet Store (Pets) award for the third year running.
In the history of these awards, they are the only nominee
to have pulled off a 'hat trick'! The Westaway family
has been running the store for 15 years and has created
a new standard of what pet stores should be. Even the
air in the bird room is pumped to provide fresh air
40 times an hour to maintain a healthy, safe environment
for animals.
‘It’s
such a great surprise. We are all so honoured,’ said
a teary Pamela Westaway, ‘we have worked so hard and
a huge effort has been made from our staff. I’m so happy.
Thank you.’
28-year-old
animal photographer Charlotte Reeves
was awarded the First Class Pet Photographer.
Ms Reeves started a blog to fuel her photography passion,
and is now receiving commission enquiries for her services
in Sydney and Melbourne.
Miami
business Polapaws Pet Treats won the
Finest Feast award for the second year
in a row. Owner Nicole Hammond has been running the
business for over ten years. |

“Every
now and then customers come to me and say, ‘Your award
right there made me buy it’ and that’s been a great
help,” says Ms Hammond. “Hopefully next year when we’re
going for the hat trick we’ll be in a bigger and better
warehouse,” says Hammond.
The Biggest Heart award went to the
RSPCA Gold Coast, a non-profit organisation
dedicated to protecting the welfare of all animals.
Peggy Hayes, RSPCA Gold Coast spokeswoman and secretary
says “it feels gratifying and fantastic to win the award.”
“We
have 200 plus volunteers and without them we don’t earn
money,” says Hayes. “On average about 45, 000 of non-paid
hours are worked each year.” “We’re looking into expanding
our fostering program as well.
Fostering
of course enables us to get the animals out of the cages.”
On top of their tremendous efforts, the RSPCA also takes
care of rescue efforts for wildlife, domestic animals
and livestock during floods and fires. Last year, Gold
Coast vet nurses attended to over 1000 jobs. The Gold
Coast branch will also be the first to install volunteer
virtual call centre operators.
“We
are looking for volunteers who are interested in donating
some of their time to helping our animals and wildlife,”
says Hayes.
Ms
Hayes also announced a new RSPCA superstore ‘World For
Pets’ would be opening in Miami off the highway.
Proud
winner of the Top Trainer award, Dee
Scott from Positive Response Dog Training
said that this award symbolizes ‘the enormous work and
effort her team has put in’ and is looking forward to
celebrating their win. To top it off, one of their most
effective training tools, the Harmony Harness,
won the Paws & Claws Greatest Pet Product
award. This clever invention is popular due to its easiness
to control the dog with no force needed.
The
Best Animal-Related Club award went
to a very dedicated group of individuals, volunteers
and foster carers who actively promote the responsible
ownership of guinea pigs, The Australian Cavy
Sanctuary (ACS). The refuge is run by devoted
animal lover, Jess Proietti who founded ACS in 2005
to supply aid and sanctuary to neglected, injured and
abandoned guineas pigs.
Representing
the Sunshine Coast, Animal Affair Dog Grooming
Salon, a long-standing salon of over 30 years,
won the Snazziest Pet Stylist award.
Owner, Sue Wright, who has been managing the salon for
over 2 years, was thrilled with the results and believes
it’s a testament to their long-term commitment and responsibility
associated with pet ownership, particularly the necessity
and importance of pet grooming.
Animal
Affair has a strong online following; their web site
provides their customers with professional assistance
and advice with their on-site support team and it contains
a blog and chat room. Their customers can also access
a wide range of products at their online store, so it
is no surprise that when their fans voted for the Snazziest
Pet Stylist they also placed a vote for the Outstanding
Pet Shop (No Pets) award – and they won both!
Well done!

| MIRACLE
CAT DEFIES DEATH IN HIGH-RISE FALL
by
Daphne McKenzie |
| |
|
Defying
death runs in the family for young Bellamy the cat,
who has survived a three–storey fall onto concrete
from his owner's home unit at Bowen Hills. After six
weeks with the vet involving treatment for two badly
broken legs and a broken jaw, the 11–month–old moggie
has been welcomed home by owner Michael Birch, another
great survivor.
Michael,
a 29yo Cerebral Palsy sufferer confined to a wheelchair,
made headlines in 2004 after surviving a savage attempt
on his life which scored his two attackers a video
camera and a collective 28 years in prison.
|
| After
multiple stabs severed Michael's vocal cords and jugular
vein, doctors marveled at his survival but said he would
never speak again. He now speaks in a whisper. Michael
fell victim again last year when his laptop was snatched
from him in a busy Bowen Hills Street, and a few months
later his much–loved assistance dog died. Then,
in February, his treasured cat Bellamy, whom he had
rescued in 2008 from a stray litter at his unit block,
fell three stories from his balcony onto concrete. |
|
"I
couldn't consider euthanasia. He's such a beautiful,
gentle, loving cat. I just adore him and couldn't bear
to lose him," Michael said.
Anvet
Kedron veterinarian Dr Susan Dawson kept Bellamy for
six weeks, replacing broken bones with a combination
of pins and plates, and repairing hernias and a fractured
jaw.
"It
was touch and go as to whether he would survive the
first week but Bellamy proved to be the perfect patient,"
Dr Dawson said.
She
recommended Michael install CATMAX, a custom–made clear–net
enclosure, to prevent any further slips by Bellamy or
Michael's new assistance dog.
"Cats
especially, if they are de–sexed, are well suited to
unit life but with increasing numbers of high–rise units,
they must be kept safely enclosed," Dr Dawson said.
|
|

Dawson. Photos by Campbell Scott. |
|
"If
they're lucky to be in a unit with a balcony, they can
enjoy the semi–outdoors but cats are adventurous and
we don't want to see injuries like poor Bellamy suffered.
Enclosures are essential, and these specialised nets
keep the animal safe while not impeding views or fresh
air."
Still
awaiting a criminal compensation payout from his 2004
attack, Michael's pockets were empty. So a relative
approached CATMAX at Woolloongabba to see if, in the
circumstances, they could offer a discounted quote to
enclose one of Michael's two balconies. Due to the low
visual impact of the enclosure, building management
gave immediate approval for its installation. CATMAX
was at Michael's unit the next day, took measurements,
and has completely enclosed his two balconies — at no
cost.
"Our
hearts just went out to Michael and to his beloved Bellamy",
CATMAX Managing Director Paul Chapman said.
"He's
had enough setbacks in life. At least now he can relax
knowing his pets are secure."
"They
could not have been more helpful," Michael said. "I
can't believe them. This is awesome." |

‘EROGENOUS
ZONES’: A WINNER FOR CHICKS AND ANIMALS ALIKE
by Nicola
Fawson |
|

|
|
Back
in the limelight, the Spotlight Theatrical
Company has done it again: put on a fantastic, sold
out show to benefit a charity! Full of continuous laughter,
both hearty and giggly, the Chicks @ Lunch crowd (and
many other halves) were entertained for over two and
a half hours while the theatre troupe presented “Erogenous
Zones”; ‘a poignant look at the ups and
downs of being in or out of a relationship’.
All
proceeds went to support the Animal Welfare League of
Queensland (AWL), with special thanks to Rosie Thompson
and the Chicks @ Lunch ‘gals’. This is just
one example of the many fundraising events the Chicks
hold in their love of gathering together to support
the AWL.
Not a smile could escape the lips of any viewer as they
were entertained, offered delightfully scrumptious intermission
treats and great company, all the while keeping in mind
the many animals in need of our care and attention.
Jacqueline
Maloney of Benowa said she loved to come along to support
such a great cause.
Animal Welfare Volunteer and animal foster-parent Emma
Carpenter went along for a fun night with her two girlfriends,
unsuspecting of the capacity of the support for the
event.
“I
was interested in coming along but I didn’t know
anything about it”, said Emma. |
|
Emma’s
friend Yasmin Winters chimed in on how excited she felt.
As
the curtains went down on a fantastic evening, Rosie
Thompson, founder of Chicks @ Lunch, openly acknowledged
the Spotlight Theatrical Company for their continued
kind donations.
“This night is really good. It’s an awesome
turnout”, she said.
“This Spotlight theatre is so charity minded.
I really, really do appreciate what they do”,
said a glowing Rosie.

| HAPPY TAILS DAY |
|
10
OCTOBER 09 |
Happy
Tails Day is a national fundraising
event for the RSPCA. Here are some
fun ideas for how you can help us to help the animals
on Happy Tails Day.
Wear
your Happy Tails Day merchandise
Happy Tails Day is the official day of the year to wear
your plush ears and tails! However, if ears and tails
don’t match your outfit you can support us by wearing
a lapel pin or a wristband instead. Or simply wear something
green and make a donation to the RSPCA on 10
October. Green
is a major feature of Happy Tails Day this year, as
it is bright and fresh, while representing the outdoors,
springtime and the RSPCA paws in our logo. Check out
the great merchandise!
Decorate,
decorate, decorate
Brighten up your desk or workspace with Happy Tails
Day posters along with photos of your pets, friends,
family and workmates.
|
|
|
|
Celebrate lunch,
morning or afternoon tea
This year’s Happy Tails Day theme is all about enjoying
the great outdoors. Celebrate Happy Tails Day with a
picnic or BBQ lunch. Have some yummy treats for morning
or afternoon tea. Think green! Green lollies, peppermint
chocolates or cupcakes topped with green icing. Don’t
forget to use RSPCA eggs in your baking! If you want
to stay healthy try crackers and guacamole or avocado
dip, green apples, grapes and honeydew melon. And to
drink why not try lime cordial or green tea? The only
limit is your imagination!
Games
for the young and young at heart
Organise a “match the pet to the owner” competition.
Bring in photos of pets and their owners and place them
on your staff noticeboard – ask for a gold coin donation
for entry and see who can match the pet to their owners
correctly.
Spread
the word
Write a letter to your local newspaper or call your
local radio station to tell them what you’re doing to
celebrate Happy Tails Day and to encourage others to
get involved. This is great publicity for your school,
business or workplace as well as promoting the event!
Display a Happy Tails Day poster on your staff noticeboard
or write an announcement to include on your staff intranet
or newsletter.
Tell
us how you celebrated Happy Tails Day!
E-mail RSPCA Qld on dbaartz@rspcaqld.org.au
to let them know how you celebrated Happy Tails Day
2008, or what a great success your event was. Take lots
of photographs, too – they’d love to see them! And if
you have any fabulous ideas for other ways to celebrate
Happy Tails Day in 2009, drop them a line and share
your thoughts!

Best
Friends Rescue (BFR) is a not
for profit organisation run solely by volunteers.
We save and re-home, abandoned and unwanted dogs
and cats. Most of our animals are saved from death
row in Council Pounds, who simply to do not have
the resources for all the unwanted animals in
Queensland. We are 100% no-kill, we take on dogs
and cats that other rescue organisations won’t
take.
As
we do not have a shelter, our animals live with
foster carers until their forever home is found.
This service runs successfully because of our
dedicated and wonderful foster carers, volunteers
and supporters. We depend heavily on donations
and support from the public, as we receive no
government funding. We
are a 100% volunteer organisation,
so all money raised goes directly to caring for
our homeless, abused and neglected cats and dogs.
|
Currently
we are trying to raise money for two special dogs
and many others that are in desperate need. |

Nintendo say the Wii Balance Board can be used to weight

| SUPPORT TOUGHER SENTENCES
FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY |
|
|
|
A
group of Brisbane lawyers have formed an organisation
to campaign for animal justice. Calling themselves BLEATS
(Brisbane Lawyers Educating and Advocating for Tougher
Sentences) their major aim is to focus attention on
the apparent unwillingness or seeming inability of Magistrates
to wield their powers under the Animal Care and Protection
Act 2001.
Solicitor Tracy-Lynne Geysen was horrified by the spate
of animal cruelty cases reported in the local media
and decided to look into what the law was actually doing
to deter the ongoing abuse.
“I was watching the news one day recently and
a report came on about a dog that was found hanging
from a tree. The announcer said the people who found
the dog were shocked but no offender had been located,”
she said. “Then there was the attempted skinning
of a live cat and the rescue of close to one hundred
animals from a house in Central Queensland. I wanted
to see if justice was being served and I found out it
manifestly was not!”

Sign
the petition urging Magistrates of Australia to forcefully
exercise their powers in accordance with the intention
of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and enforce
the maximum penalties upon the perpetrators of animal
cruelty.

| Doggie's Story |
| A
guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and
he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style
house: 'Talking Dog For Sale ' He rings the bell and
the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard
and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.
'You talk?' he asks.
'Yep,' the Lab replies.
After the guy recovers from
the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your
story?' |
|
 |
|
The Lab looks up and says, 'Well,
I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young.
I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA.
In no time at all they had me jetting from country to
country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders,
because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.'
'I was one of their most valuable
spies for eight years running. But the jetting around
really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any
younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for
a job at the airport to do some undercover security,
wandering near suspicious characters and listening in.
I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded
a batch of medals.' 'I got married, had a mess of puppies,
and now I'm just retired.'
The guy is amazed. He goes back
in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.
'Ten dollars,' the guy says.
'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing!
Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?'
'Because he's a liar. He never
did any of that sh...’
