OCTOBER 2010

Welcome to our October E-News!

So much has happened this October!

The weather has been going absolutely wild, with heavy rain and storms pelting the typically sunny South-East Queensland every other day.

Many animals, and especially our canine friends, experience severe reactions to noisy Queensland storms. For tips on how to manage behavioural problems associated with wild weather see our story on storms and your pet.

The humid, wet weather also brings with it nasties such as ticks that can be harmful, and even fatal, to your pet. See our tick story below for some handy hints on dealing with tick season.

October has also been a big month for animal awareness. Animal Action Day expanded this year into a full weekend over the 2 and 3 October, and the Animal Welfare League‘s annual Open Day was a fantastic success on Saturday 2 October, despite the less than inviting weather. The very next day the AWL hosted the annual Blessing of the Animals.

It’s been great to see the many ways in which the people of South-East Queensland show their love and support for animals. If you know of any important animal awareness or pet events please let us know by emailing news@pawsandclaws.com.au.

Your comments and suggestions are always welcome, we'd love to hear your feedback on any of our stories featured in this E-NEWS. You can email us at news@pawsandclaws.com.au.

Cover Model Winner Announced!

A star is born! Boy, the 5 year old Siberian Husky, has taken out the Paws & Claws and Zoo Studio ‘Search For A Cover Model Competition Part II’!

With 180 stunning contestants the competition was fierce, but the unanimous judges couldn’t go past Boy’s beautiful doggy smile and his striking Husky features.

Boy was adopted by his loving family from the Animal Welfare League. His mum Jane had just started volunteering when he turned up as a stray, and she knew as soon as she met him that he was meant to be part of the family.

Coming in a close second behind Boy as first runner-up is the gorgeous Seal Point Ragdoll, Bella. At the tender age of just 6 months Bella already exhibits the kind of star-quality the judges were looking for.

Second runner-up is the charming 18 month old Rottweiler Luxe. Luxe graduated from the highest level of his obedience training. His obedience and his happy personality make him a great representative of this highly misunderstood breed.

TICK SEASON IS UPON US

Queensland is notorious for tick season. This year’s unseasonably wet Spring has seen the tick season begin early this year, with veterinary surgeons reporting a sharp rise in the number of pets needing treatment for tick bites over the last month.

STORM SEASON

Storm season is just around the corner, and experts are reporting that this year we will see a return of the wild weather that Queensland is known for. Fear of thunderstorms is a common problem for many cats and dogs.

THE AWLQ CELEBRATES

October has been a big month for the pets and animals of South-East Queensland with the Animal Welfare League (AWLQ) Open Day and the Annual Blessing of the Animals kick-starting the month.

ANIMAL ACTION DAY

The 4th Annual Animal Action Day took place Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of October despite cold and wet conditions on the usually sunny Gold Coast.
